The term turtle is used to describe numerous diverse species of the Order Testudines. Some common terms used to describe turtles based on habitat are tortoise (terrestrial), terrapin (brackish water), and sea turtle (marine). The turtles shown in this picture represent three species of North American box turtle. The land-dwelling box turtles are the only turtles that can pull their entire body inside their shell. This is possible because the plastron (bottom plate) of the shell is hinged in the middle.
