Alligators are only found in the southeastern United States and a limited area in the Yangtze River Valley in China. The Chinese alligator is an endangered species while the American alligator's numbers are abundant. The average American alligator weighs 800 pounds and is 13 feet in length. These large reptiles have been known to reach 14.5 feet and exceed 1,000 pounds. The Chinese alligator is much smaller. On land an alligator can attain a speed of 45 mph for brief periods.
